*UPDATE #23*

HIGHWAY 1/COW CLIFFS VIADUCT PROJECT CONTINUES—FIRST OVERNIGHT FULL CLOSURE NEXT THURSDAY NIGHT, JANUARY 28
MONTEREY COUNTY – A primarily daytime 1/2-mile project to construct a viaduct continues along Hwy. 1 near Lucia from the Big Creek Bridge to south of Dolan Creek Bridge, 18 miles south of Big Sur.

Cow Cliffs will have its first overnight full closure on Thursday, Jan. 28 from 10 pm until 6 am (Friday morning) to place girders on the viaduct. Electronic message boards will be activated to inform motorists of this hard closure. The CHP will assist with traffic control. Motorists are advised to reach their destination by 10 pm on Thursday, Jan. 28.
There will be daytime roadwork next week including the backfilling of the abutment walls at Cow Cliffs. There will be 10-minute traffic holds as needed. Hwy. 1 at Cow Cliffs will continue with one-way signalized traffic control 24/7.

The project consists of constructing a permanent viaduct, about five miles north of Lucia and 18 miles south of Big Sur. Daily roadwork schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions and other factors so stay tuned for weekly updates. ALL BUSINESSES ALONG THE BIG SUR COAST WILL REMAIN OPEN.

In order to minimize traffic impact as part of the project, there will be advance notification for motorists, residents and businesses via a traffic hotline, electronic message signs and email updates.

The contractor for this $3.9 million project is RGW Construction Inc. of Livermore, CA. Completion is scheduled for fall of 2016, weather permitting.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through highway construction zones.
For traffic updates on other state highways in Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties, motorists can call Caltrans District 5 Public Affairs at 805-549-3318 or can visit the District 5 website at: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/road_information.htm <http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist05/road_information.htm> . Motorists can also contact the toll-free hotline from Cambria to Carmel at: 888-836-0866.

Hello Big Sur!
Caltrans informed me that the closure at Fernwood is now open. There is

however a slide blocking the southbound lane one mile south of Big Sur

Station. Caltrans will be out at first light to clean up that slide and the

rest of the accumulation from overnight.
Be safe!

hwy 1 hard closure at Fernwood at 6 pm

Hello Big Sur!
Highway 1 will have a hard closure at approximately 6:00 PM tonight until

PGE can cut the tree and repair the power lines that fell earlier today

adjacent to Fernwood Resort. CHP website is stating this will be a 4-6 hour

closure. Keep an eye on CHP website for updates and stay off the highway if

you can. There are several slides and lots of rocks raining down on Highway

1.
Diverting traffic through Fernwood campground is no longer an option

tonight.

Hello Big Sur!5:30 PM
I just received a call from Colin Jones at Caltrans and Highway 1 will be closed overnight just south of Coast Gallery (MM 40.9) to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park (MM 36.0).

The closure will start at sundown and they will re-evaluate at first light tomorrow morning.
CHP website is presently misreporting the incident at “Pfeiffer Big Sur Main Entrance Road” and Colin will be calling them to get that corrected.
Looks like we will have consistent rain throughout the weekend. Plan accordingly and be safe!
Regards,

Stan Russell
