HIGHWAY 1 CURB RAMP/SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS IN CARMEL IS UNDERWAY

CARMEL – A project to construct new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb
ramps, pathways and pedestrian refuge areas on Highway 1 at Ocean Avenue is underway,
Caltrans officials have announced.

Roadwork hours are from 10:30 pm to 7 am on Sunday nights and from 7:30 pm until 7 am
Monday through Thursday. No weekend or holiday work is scheduled. Lane closures will be in
effect with at least one lane in each direction open at all times.

Electronic message signs have been posted to advise motorists, who should experience only
minor traffic delays.

This $150,000 project will improve safety and access for pedestrians, cyclists and disabled
persons. Granite Construction of Watsonville is the contractor. Completion is scheduled by the
end of 2012.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through
highway work zones.

HIGHWAY 1 CARMEL TO CAMBRIA ROADWAY UPDATE

OVERNIGHT CLOSURES AT BRIDGE AND ROCK SHED-COMPLETED

MONTEREY COUNTY: Bridge and rock shed work continues on Highway 1 at
Pitkins/Rain Rocks (PM 21.3), 1.8 miles south of Lucia and 25 miles south
of Big Sur as part of the bridge and rock shed project, Caltrans officials
have announced.

The four overnight full Hwy. 1 closures of the bridge and rock shed
completed on schedule Friday morning, July 13.

All roadwork on the $30 million project is expected to be completed by
Spring of 2013.

A permanent viaduct repair project is being implemented for Rocky Creek. It
is an $11 million project to begin after Labor Day. More details to follow.

Caltrans reminds motorists to move over and slow down when driving through
highway construction zones.

CALTRANS WELCOMES NEW DISTRICT 5 DIRECTOR TIMOTHY GUBBINS

SAN LUIS OBISPO – On July 1, 2012, Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty
appointed Timothy “Tim” Gubbins as the District 5 Director, overseeing all
department functions within San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Santa
Cruz and San Benito counties.

“Having worked at Caltrans my entire career, I’m thrilled to accept this
position with all of its opportunities and challenges,” said Gubbins. We
have a wonderful staff in District 5, who are dedicated to improving
transportation mobility and safety for everyone who travels the central
coast.”

A licensed civil engineer, Tim has over 24 years of strong experience with
Caltrans, serving in a variety of engineering and management positions. His
diverse career path has included assignments in Construction, Design, and
Special Studies. He has served as the Interim Division Chief of Project
Management in the Central Region, and has had several temporary assignments
within HQ Project Management.

Prior to being appointed as the District Director, he served as the Deputy
District Director for Program Project Management for eleven years.

Tim graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelors of Science degree
in Civil Engineering, and began his state service with Caltrans District 5
in 1988. Tim resides in San Luis Obispo with his wife and two children.

Two more overnight full Hwy. 1 closures of the bridge and rock shed are
necessary for the roof panels to be completely installed overhead on the
rock shed. Roadwork continues Wednesday, July 11 and Thursday, July 12 from
9 pm to 6 am (finishing on Friday morning, July 13).

Electronic message signs will be posted at each end of the closure and at
three other locations alerting motorists of the closure ahead. Emergency
vehicles will be allowed through, although it may involve up to 30-minute
delays. All roadwork on the $30 million project is expected to be completed
by Spring of 2013.

Motorists are advised to use highways 46, 101 and 68 as alternate routes
around the closure. All businesses, hotels and campgrounds in the Big Sur
area remain open and accessible.
